Summary
“Oh, I don’t know,” Wymack shrugged, feigning mock contemplation. “Maybe to just show some sort of respect for your teammates.”
Kevin let out a huff of breath, rolling his eyes. “I’ll respect them when they give me a reason to.”
“And you wonder why they wouldn’t want to spend more time with you?” Wymack shook his head, running a hand over his face.
And Kevin must not have done a good job schooling his expression that time, because when Wymack looked at him again, Wymack froze, his expression shifting from annoyance to something else.
He sighed, coming to stand in front of Kevin. “If you could just try a bit –”
“I am,” Kevin cried, throwing his hands up. “I am trying. I have been trying.”
“You snap at everyone constantly –”
“This is how we talked to each other, this is how we all talked to each other in the – I don’t know why you all seem to think I can just turn it off when for a decade this is all I knew, this is the only way I could talk to someone and get them to listen, to respect me, to fucking care about what I was saying,” Kevin ran a tired hand over his face.

Summary
Jeremy glared at the man, but before Jean could grab him again, he hurried out of the room.
With the immediate threat gone, Jean’s full attention was back on Jeremy. At first, there was only anger on his face, but slowly that melted away into a blank stare.
“Are you hurt?” Jean spoke quickly, striding across the room.
“He didn’t hit me. He hit the wall.” Jeremy shook his head, looking off at nothing as he spoke. The hole just inches from his head was evidence of his words.
And then Jeremy dropped to the floor.
His back slid down the wall, knees tucked into his chest.
Jean scrambled over to him, ready to check him for injuries. But when Jean grabbed his chin, gently lifting his head from his knees, Jeremy’s eyes were wide, and his breath was coming in short little pants.
“He didn’t hit me. He didn’t hit me, I don’t know why I’m –” His words cut off with a sharp gasp, and he looked frantic.
“Jean?” Jeremy choked out his name like a question, a plea, those brown, glassy eyes finding Jean’s, panic overtaking his features.
Jean scrambled closer to him, desperately racking his brain for what he could do to pull his captain out of his own head.

Summary
His feet were moving before his brain had fully processed everything, and he was throwing himself down beside the backliner. There was nothing that could knock Jean down hard enough that he would not get back up again. He would only stay down if he couldn’t get back up.
Jean was pale, his pained breaths shallow.
“Show me what hurts,” Jeremy spoke as calmly as he could, but something wasn’t right. An eerie feeling hummed across his skin. He threw off his gloves and his helmet.
“I can’t, I can’t,” Jean was gasping over and over. His eyes were wide beneath the bars of his mask, gaze flickering back and forth up and down in a frantic pattern.
“What? You can’t what?” Jeremy’s hands hovered just above him, looking for the wound, the blood to staunch, something, anything he could do to help. He thought about stripping Jean of his gear, but thought better of it, not knowing where or what the injury was. A slow stream of blood poured from his nose. What was wrong? Why wouldn’t Jean just show him what was wrong? “What hurts?”
Jean’s eyes locked with Jeremy’s, grey and wide and terrified.
“I can’t feel anything.” It sounded like he was choking.

Summary
He bent down and began soaking up the tea, gathering the pieces of the shattered mug into a little pile as he went.
When he soaked up all the liquid, he tossed the towel into the sink and dropped down beside the pile.
He could fix this. He could.
He sifted through the jagged edges until he found two that looked like they went together, the edges and colors matching. But when he held them together, they didn’t fit quite right. It was as if pieces even smaller had broken off so they couldn’t go together again, and Kevin sifted through the pile for them, but they were so minuscule he couldn’t tell which they were or if they were even in the pile at all.
His eyes heated, and his throat felt tight as he set the pieces down and picked up two others, trying to make them fit again. But it was the same problem, over and over and over, until tears were rolling down his cheeks.
It was stupid to cry over a broken cup, but –
He grabbed a piece, turning it over in his hand, a little Ferris wheel car visible.
It was the first trip he and Jean had ever taken together outside of games.

Or, Kevin does something that triggers Jean and spirals into self-loathing.

Summary
“You are scaring me, Jeremy.”
There was a scuffle and shuffling, Jean’s voice further away saying something to someone, telling them to do something, breaths more ragged now. “Jeremy, what’s going on?”
“I’m sorry,” Jeremy said again. “I’m sorry, I tried, Jean. I really did. But I’m so tired of trying. I just need it to stop.”
“Oh, oh mon–” Jean swore in French. “You did not. Jeremy, you did not.”
“I’m sorry,” Jeremy whispered. He leaned over so he was lying on the ground now, curling up on his side so the phone was wedged between his ear and the ground. His head felt light, his body numb.
“No,” Jean sobbed. There was a horn somewhere. “No, you did not, Jeremy. Why?”
“I’m so tired,” Jeremy mumbled, his eyes slipping shut. It was all going fuzzy around the edges now. His chest did not feel so tight anymore. “I just wanted to hear your voice one more time.”
“Non, non, keep talking to me, okay? Keep talking, stay awake.”
“Too tired,” Jeremy slurred, his eyes remaining closed.
“You are okay, you are going to be okay.” Distant shouting, another horn.

Summary
Jean scoffed mockingly, “As long as I’m here and looking after you I say no.”
Elodie scrunched her face up, glaring harder. “God, I hate you sometimes,” she muttered under her breath.
Jean crossed his arms, now fuming. “Oh yeah? Well you know what? New rule. You can’t date until I do.”
He stared down at her, his chin in the air, unwavering. Taking satisfaction in the way her eyes widened as she raised up onto her knees.
“WHAT? You’re a mutant! YOU’RE NEVER GOING TO DATE!” she yelled at him.

Summary
“One condition,” the man said, his face suddenly becoming very serious, though amusement still lingered around the edges.
Jean nodded for him to continue, although he wasn’t sure his brain processed the words in real time.
“Don’t fall in love with me.”

Summary
With a violent jerk as if he'd been struck, Jean turned to hide his face in Jeremy's right palm, breathing in the lingering smell of the cocoa scented lotion he'd rubbed on before bed.
Jeremy pet at his hair with his free hand. "Baby, baby, baby," he chimed, his voice so sweet and soothing that Jean's heart clenched longingly in his chest. "It's okay, just breathe. Just breathe."

Summary
The offer from Jean's gang-affiliated coworker is pretty tempting: kidnap rich kid Jeremy Knox and get a decent cut when his family coughs up the ransom for his safe return. Jean is positively desperate for something to finally go right in his life, so if the offer seems a little too good to be true and the abduction goes a little too smoothly, then he can't be held responsible for missing the signs that something is definitely off about this job. About Jeremy Knox.

Summary
What happens when 'happily ever after' has its own ending?
Jean Moreau had never truly believed in those words. 'Forever' was as much a fantasy as his fourth year at USC had been. It was as much a fantasy as Jeremy himself was. Dreams ended. The sun set. Nothing good lasted, so of course they didn't either. It was best not to hope.
Jeremy Knox did believe in those words, even after so long of having to live one day after another that tried to prove him wrong. Dreams could be made real. The sun always rose. They'd had such a good life and hard times never lasted forever. Hope was the best thing to hold close.
Three years after the End, Jean and Jeremy find themselves on the same professional exy team in Chicago. As past, present, and future collide, they have to confront old wounds and long silences to make the most dangerous decision of their lives: What is worth a second chance?
