Summary
John isn't quite sure of his role in the new and fragile team he's ended up with after getting used to being assigned one all these years as a soldier and a shadow operative.
Everyone else seems to fall into some designation or other—leader, strategist, moral compass, father figure, muscle—all of them pieces falling in a puzzle that John can't seem to fill because the others fit better, and the thought slowly pushes him into a frustrated despair.
John spirals, becoming one with the sofa. He doesn't know that something else is wrong with him. Something darker and more sinister.

John wakes up in a cold sweat, drawing deep, labored breaths, feeling like his chest is about to cave in.
His bloodshot eyes focus, and with it comes the chilling realization.
A sinister shape, pitch black, is straddling him, a figure so utterly devoid of light that it's silhouetted by the already dark background that is his room.
It only takes a second for him to catch on. He's seen this figure before, hovering above New York the day Bob transformed into Sentry.

“The clan wouldn’t want him for that! He’s just an innocent child. He didn’t ask for the Nine Tailed Fox! The same way our clan didn’t ask for the sharingan.”
“There is some suspicion that the Uchiha clan may have been responsible for the Nine Tails attack.” Hiruzen said. “I do not share these suspicions, but a minority on the counsel do.”
Obito’s jaw dropped. “The Uchiha clan helped found this village. Generations of Uchihas have given their lives to protect this village! There is no way that kind of thing would happen.”

He wishes he was there, suddenly, wishes he was by Johnny’s side as he walked through the doorway and realised that his childhood room was waiting for him like a time capsule. Wishes he got to see the embarrassed scrunch of his face, the way the tips of his ears would flush red.
Soap has a whole second life, outside of the SAS. He’s got a mother, and a poorly-decorated bedroom, and a bear. All Ghost has is a flat that will be the same it is today as it will be the day he dies, like he was never even here at all.

Summary
Obito arrives a few moments earlier when Rin jumps in front of Kakashi’s chidori. He’s still too late to save her, but he’s in time to watch the sequence of events that makes Kakashi shatter. Instead of returning to Madara, he chooses to live by his own mantra and refuses to abandon his friend in his time of need. Obito returns to Konoha with Kakashi, and this results in just a few unintended consequences. One of them being his insistence that he should be allowed to care for his late sensei’s orphan son, no matter what the Sandaime might say about the matter. He’s not quite sure how Kakashi becoming his unofficial co-parent fits into this, but he’ll figure it out eventually.

Summary
When Kushina notices that Obito's a kinesthetic learner like her, she tries to ignore it. Really, she does—but Minato has no idea what he's doing when it comes to teaching him, and Kushina can't let the kid's potential be wasted like that. She takes on Obito as a student, then, and somehow gets Rin as one too. It changes... pretty much everything.
Kushina can’t shake that moment from from her mind. She can’t help but to remember all the times she’s heard him referred to as unmotivated, or lazy, or untalented.
Because now the pieces have clicked together, it’s become overwhelmingly clear that Obito is like her, but he doesn’t have the fallbacks she has. He doesn’t have the strength of being a jinchuuriki to back him up, or the chakra chains she’s had from the beginning. Worst of all, she thinks, he’s been pitted up against the most talented prodigy of his generation since day one, constantly compared and found to be lesser.
And Kushina knows Minato, knows he’ll do everything he can to make his kids get along, to eliminate any rivalries that might arise in the name of teamwork. That’s all fine and good, she supposes, but it’s not what Obito needs.
